Irish Living
Of
all the countries I've travel in my years none have captivated my
heart like Ireland. Now let me make one thing perfectly clear, I do
not consider any large city within Ireland to be truly Irish. And in
the case of Dublin never has this been so true, for I have known
little hospitality or comfort within the city limits. Roddy Doyle
said “It's a big con job. We have sold the myth of Dublin as a sexy
place incredibly well; because it is a dreary little dump most of the
time.”
I
don't wish to slander Dublin or the larger cities around her in this
post, however I most say I am doing a fine job of it so far, I am
merely setting up a comparison. For real Irish living can only be
experienced in the country. Here along the coastline of the Ring of
Kerry lies the ever unchanging beauty of Ireland. And I should know
for I have been visiting this wondrous place of sirenic beauty ever
since I was young, and it has not changed a day since then. Whatever
year you come to see this land for yourself I can assure you the
winds will still howl, the sea will still roar, and the mountains
will still thunder over you like giants. The land has a mythical feel
to it as you stand in the mist or climb one of the sky scraping
mountains. The cold sea air will transport you back in time when tall
ships and schooner sailed the waters. And the stone cottages, which
and be over two centuries old, will make you wonder just how anyone
survived winter around here. I love to walk the country side and
imagining everything as it could have been. Yes Ireland is a home
away from home, and the people of the Ring of Kerry are more like
family than strangers.
No,
Ireland was not the start of my travels nor was it the flame that
sparked the Spirit of Adventure in my life, but it fueled it. Irish
history along side with their myths legends have been gasoline to my
desire to search out the strange and adventurous places of the world.
